Edward del Val, English Instructor
I have been teaching developmental and transfer-level writing since 1998 in university and community college settings in both California and Oregon. Before becoming a writing instructor, I spent twelve years teaching small boat sailing to youth on the very challenging waters of San Francisco Bay. On those waters, I learned much of what guides my teaching today: Learning must feel safe enough to allow students to take risks that they otherwise wouldnt take, risks that push them well beyond their level of comfort where real learning and confidence building can take place.
As a developmental writing instructor within the English Department here at Mt. Hood Community College, I have my students engage in meaningful acts of writing that ask them both to draw on their own knowledge and to respond critically to texts and issues that they may have thought little about. As my students prepare to write essays on the material we cover, I provide extensive in-class and out-of-class support so as to demystify the writing process and to model what good writers do. Before we know it, we are off and writing, and there is nothing I enjoy more than to watch my students mature in self-confidence and ability while they learn a skill that is so necessary for their personal, academic, and professional success.
