How to Use Tutoring Services

Welcome to the Learning Assistance Center! We offer free tutoring in a variety of academic subjects to registered MHCC students. Qualified tutors are available at scheduled hours. For tutor schedules click here, or stop by the Learning Assistance Center front desk.

GENERAL PROCEDURE

  1. Log in on the computer located at the front counter using your MHCC student ID number. Be sure the screen shows the subject for which you are being tutored; change the subject if necessary. If you are not able to use the computer, have staff direct you on using the manual sign-in sheet.
  2. Sit at the appropriate table. Tables are marked with the subject name and course level.
  3. Raise the red flag attached to the basket on the table when you are ready for tutoring.
  4. Before you leave, log out on the computer or sign-in sheet.

PROCESS FOR OBTAINING WRITING TUTORING

  1. To ensure help with a writing assignment, which is one-on-one tutoring, try to make an appointment at least three days in advance. Staff on duty will schedule your appointment. You may choose a 30 or 45-minute appointment. Assistance is limited to 1 1/2 hours per week.
  2. You will be given an appointment slip when you sign up which summarizes our policies:
POLICIES
LATE ARRIVALS: Try to arrive 5 minutes early. Late students will lose their appt. time to drop-in students after 5 minutes; however, students may use the remainder of their appointment time if the tutor has not begun with another student.
CANCELLATIONS: If you cannot make it to your appointment, cancel at least one day in advance. Cancellations may be made in person at Tutorial Services or call 491-7108 to leave a voice mail message. Two no shows will result in loss of appointment privileges, after which time tutoring will be allowed on a drop-in basis only.
PREPARATION: Estimate the time you need carefully. Be fully prepared for the tutor to read your paper or to ask specific questions. Unless you are needing help in selecting or narrowing your topic, having at least a typed rough draft ready is preferable and will maximize your tutoring time.
  1. When you arrive for your appointment, check in with Learning Assistance Center staff.
  2. Log in and out on the computer as described above in General Procedures.

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENTS

  • Come to the Learning Assistance Center as soon as you have trouble - don't wait until the last minute.
  • Be prepared. Bring texts or other necessary class materials.
  • Allow enough time for tutoring; you will have to wait if the tutors are busy. Work on your own until the tutor arrives. The busiest hours are generally between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
  • DON'T EXPECT ANSWERS; tutors will ask questions that will help you solve problems.
  • Assistance with take-home exams cannot be given.
  • Be patient with the tutor and yourself. Some problems are not easily solved.
  • If you feel you are being overlooked by the tutors let a staff member know. We try to maintain a first-come, first-served service.
  • Don't expect your tutor to know everything. He/she may also have to seek help.
  • Suggestion boxes for your comments are located around the center.
