a person who changed her life and in doing so, the lives of others.
Margaret Lorain was a young woman who found herself with two infant children,
living in an abusive relationship. Through determination and a strength of
purpose, she made the decision to change her circumstances and as a result,
turn her life in a different, positive direction. To do so, she left the abusive
relationship and found herself a single parent with two children and as the
breadwinner/caregiver for her retired parents. She supported her family, made
the time and found the resources to complete a college degree and the requirements
for a teaching license. She made the decision to reorient her life and successfully
completed the transition. Following this period of change, for over a 30 years
period she was a teacher, friend and mentor to numerous students and adults,
particularly those who found themselves in challenging life situations and
in support of those who worked to change them.
Margaret Lorain passed away in 2000. This scholarship is to honor her life
and values, and is provided so that others, too, may be enabled to change the
circumstances of an unhappy situation into a happy and successful life of peace,
contribution, and contentment.
