Frequently Asked Questions

Are Learning Success Center services free?

All services are free to registered MHCC students. Students must provide a student ID number or social security number to use tutoring.

Do I have to make an appointment to get tutoring?

For most tutoring you do not need to make an appointment; simply show up to the tutoring area with your assignment, books, and other class materials. Tutors will come to your table when you raise a flag indicating you need help.

Writing tutoring is generally available by appointment. You are also welcome to drop in and check for last-minute availability due to cancellations or no-shows. For quick questions, a writing tutor is available several days a week in the LSC Computer Skills Lab. For appointments, call (503) 491-7108.To see current term schedules for writing, click here.

For information on tutoring in other subjects contact Larry Gilius at (503) 491-7507.

I need some place to check my email and do some internet research for a class. Can I use the Computer Skills Lab?

The lab is available to students to work on academic-related tasks. For personal emailing you can use the Internet Access room in the library. When a class is using the lab, other students can use the lab with the instructor’s permission. However, instructors usually have no problem with others using the lab during their class time.

What do you mean by “learning skills”?

On a basic level, learning skills are just study skills: being able to read the textbook, take notes in class, concentrate in class and during study time, plan your time so you can attend class, study, etc. These are all the skills you need to be able to learn any subject. On a broader level, learning skills are what you need to effectively receive and organize new information so that it becomes part of you – your knowledge and abilities. Learning skills are sometimes difficult to learn because they are underneath the surface. We spend so much time trying to learn to – for example -- solve an algebra problem that we don’t ever really think about how we learned how to do it. You can develop your own learning skills simply by spending time thinking about the process you use to learn any new skill or piece of information. Once you develop your learning skills, learning any subject will be easier.

How can I get my own, one-on-one tutor?

We do offer on-going, individual tutoring to students who meet the criteria. One-on-one tutoring is designed for people who are genuinely making an effort to succeed—attending class, completing homework, going to instructor office hours, already using drop-in tutoring—yet still struggling to pass the class.

We are here to help you, so please come see to our front desk (AC 3300, above the library) for more information, or call (503) 491-7108.

One-on-one tutoring slots generally fill up in the first 3-4 weeks of the term, so please contact us as soon as you feel you need help.

I think I might have a learning disability because I can’t ever finish my tests on time and I get really distracted. Can you help me get extra time or a private room for testing ?

If you think you have a learning disability and want accommodations for testing, the best thing is to talk to a counselor in the Disability Services office (in the Student Services office). They can explain how to find out if you have a learning disability and what you can do to be successful on tests.

The Learning Success Center can help you develop better learning and testing strategies as well, so please come make an appointment with one of our learning specialists.

How do I get an appointment with a learning specialist?

Learning specialists can help you figure out more effective, efficient ways to learn, study, and test. Appointments are available most days of the week. Please come to our front desk (AC 3300, above the library), or call (503) 491-7108 for an appointment. Same-day appointments are sometimes, but rarely, available. Please plan to make an appointment 2-3 days in advance.
