Health Careers Access Project

The Health Careers Access Project (HCAP) is a new 3-year demonstration project of the Transitions/Transiciones Program at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC). The project will a) assist low-income, minority and non-native English speaking women to prepare for successful entry into nursing and other Portland-area healthcare training programs and b) establish a model for dissemination to other Oregon community colleges through a statewide network of Transitions programs.

A Successful Start!

  • 226 women received health career education.
  • 83 students (including minority/bilingual students) identified healthcare as a career option and received persistence services.
  • The program maintained a 78% persistence rate among HCAP participants during its first year.
  • 15 HCAP participants have been admitted to allied health programs including Nursing, Medical Assistant, Medical Office, Mental Health/Social Work, Medical Laboratory Technician, Surgical Technology, and Community Health.

How To Apply?
All HCAP participants must first complete the MHCC Transitions and/or Transiciones Program. Through these programs students will research a variety of careers and training programs and improve their college study skills. Following completion of Transitions/Transiciones , HCAP participants will work with staff to develop and pursue their academic and career plan. To find more about Transitions and/or Transiciones call 503 491 7680 ex 0 to inquire about information session dates and times.
