Policies and Procedures Statement

The Business Technology Faculty has established the following list of policies and procedures for all Software Training Center (STC) courses. After attending a mandatory orientation, please sign and return the attached Compliance form stating that you understand all the listed policies and procedures.

LAB HOURS ROOM 2610 (503) 491-7615
Mon Tues Wed 8 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Thurs Fri Sat 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
Hours Subject to Change

NOTE: The STC is ONLY open in the summer months for scheduled classes. There are no lab hours in the summer. Students may use the Academic Computer Lab – Room 1451 – to complete their assignments during summer term.

The lab times for the Software Training Center will be posted each term and are subject to change without notice due to a lack of staff, inclement weather, or recognized holidays. Arrange a minimum of four hours per week in your schedule to come to the STC to complete the course assignments. Please note: The STC is not open during Finals Week; therefore, all courses must be completed by that time.

Please label all jump/flash drives, disks, textbooks, and any other personal items with your name. Lost items are placed in a lost and found box behind the front desk. They are kept in the lab for one week and then sent to the College Center. Lost jump/flash drives are locked up and you must ask for them at the front counter.

Lost data due to power surges or damaged drives are natural consequences experienced in a lab environment and are the sole responsibility of the student. Save your document frequently!

WORKING OFFSITE POLICY

No instructor or lab support will be provided for any work performed outside of the Software Training Center.

LAB POLICIES

  • No activated cell phones or pagers
  • No food or drink in the lab
  • No children allowed (Board Policy)
  • STC is to be used for BT, LA & MO courses only
  • No disruptive behavior (swearing, loud voices, or disparaging remarks)
  • No copying or removing files or programs from computers

SYLLABUS AND ASSIGNMENT SCHEDULE

You have been provided with a Syllabus, Assignment Schedules, and Tip Sheets as required for your software and level. Please read, note, and mark these tips in your textbook before starting the work. Any changes to these materials will be posted in the lab. Read and do all the work in each “chapter” assigned; it is critical to your success and ability to do the assigned work at the end of each chapter. Hand in each assignment schedule on or before the due date given during orientation (and posted in the lab). Follow instructions for labeling your work and hand the work to a lab assistant. (See Check-in Procedures on this sheet)

LATE WORK POLICY

No late work will be accepted without penalty. Your grade will be lowered by one full letter grade if turned in no later than noon on the Monday following the due date. Late work will not be accepted after that Monday at noon. If you are handing in late work, hand it to a lab assistant in the STC (see Check-In Procedures, Step #1 on next page) so the date and time will be properly recorded.

PRINTOUTS AND ANSWER GUIDES

Each printout must be labeled with your name, text page number, and the type of work it is (project #, lab #, step #, question #, etc.). Printouts not properly labeled will be returned ungraded and therefore considered late. You may compare your printouts with the sample answer guides provided in the lab. Check for content and make all necessary corrections. Remember, you will receive little to no assistance when working on the “A” level work, so carefully monitor your progress and knowledge as you approach those assignments.

CHECK-IN PROCEDURES

  1. On or before the posted due date, turn in Assignment Schedule # 1. Label each printout with your name, exercise #, and page number in the upper right-hand corner, staple together in the proper order, and give to a lab assistant in the STC (Room 2610)

  2. Ask for your corrected Assignment Schedule #1 from a lab assistant on the Tuesday following the due date.
This is your responsibility. Correct any mistakes and return your revisions with Assignment Schedule #2. Failure to do so will impact your grade.

  3. On or before the posted due date, turn in Assignment Schedule # 2. Label each printout with your name, exercise #, and page number in the upper right-hand corner, staple together in the proper order, and turn in to a lab assistant in the STC (Room 2610). Bring your flash/jump drive to the lab to be copied by a lab assistant. This process will validate your hardcopy printouts.

  4. Your Assignment Schedule #2 will be returned to the lab for you to pick up. All work will be recycled unless you have checked the “return work” box on the bottom of Assignment Schedule #2. Any Assignment Schedule not picked up by the 2nd week of the next term will be recycled.

WHO IS GRADING MY WORK?

To find out who is grading your software course, check the list that will be posted in the STC by the end of the first week of a 5-week session. The instructors for the STC are as follows:

Instructors Telephone Office E-mail
Robin Brush 503-491-7174 #2777 Robin.Brush@mhcc.edu
Julie Donaldson
(Coordinator)
503-491-7595 #2610A Julie.Donaldson@mhcc.edu
Brenda Houchen 503-491-7431 #2782 Brenda.Houchen@mhcc.edu
Pam Shields 503-491-7458 #2780 Pam.Shields@mhcc.edu

GRADING POLICY

Grades are assigned based on the option you selected at registration. Check your registration slip. You are the only one who can change this option with the Admissions & Records Office. All work must be accurate, labeled properly, organized, and on time to earn any level of grade. Your work will be dropped one letter grade if your Assignment Schedule # 1 or # 2 work does not meet these standards or you did not complete all work in each grade column. For example: If you completed the “A” level work (columns 1 and 2 and 3) in Assignment Schedule #1, then completed the “C” level work (column 1) in Assignment Schedule #2 your grade would be a “C.” We do not average grades! The grade type assigned will be in accordance with the option printed on the official grade sheet from A & R (Admissions and Records).

STANDARDS/ETHICS

You are expected to practice appropriate ethical conduct by independently completing assignments and lab work. Students must not plagiarize by allowing students to copy or use data or answers or by supplying data or answers to other students. Common instances of this type of plagiarism includes copying sentences from another student's paper or test, turning in papers or documents produced by someone else, copying documents from any type of media to your own, failing to credit the source of ideas, giving documents/files/jump drives/disks to someone to copy, or ANY OTHER like acts or deeds defined as plagiarism by the instructor.

Intentional plagiarism on the part of a student is a very serious offense and will result in the student receiving a failing grade for the course or suffering other disciplinary measures. Cheating results in an immediate F grade for the entire course. All other Business Technology instructors and Student Services will be notified of the cheating.

STUDENT CONCERNS

If you are in doubt about an ethical issue, ask your instructor. Students who have a concern or problem should first try to resolve it with the involved person(s). You may refer to the Student Handbook.
