MHCC COMPUTER LAB SURVIVAL TIPS
ACADEMIC COMPUTER CENTER
ROOMS 1450, 1451, & 1453

NOTE!!! CLASSROOM AREAS WITHIN THE LABS MAY BE RESERVED AT ANY GIVEN TIME. AVOID FRUSTRATIONS - ROUTINELY CHECK FOR UPDATES AND CHANGES!

Virus protection is provided on all the computers in the lab areas. Know where your disk has been. The intentional spreading of computer viruses is a crime. Mt. Hood Community College will pursue the imposition of disciplinary sanctions on students (consistent with local, state and federal law) up to and including expulsion and referral for prosecution for violations.

Here are a few general tips on lab use. They are intended to help both new and returning students:

  1. WARNING!! Computer hardware and software usage is limited to authorized class related research and assignments only. Unauthorized, inappropriate, or personal use may result in loss of lab privileges. This includes e-mail, chat rooms, and other internet areas. There is no privacy – your lab activity can and will be monitored locally and remotely.

  2. All printers are connected through the network. One printer serves several PCs. If paper is needed in any of the printers, notify the computer aide on duty. Be aware before using manual feed on the printers, there is no way to stop other print jobs from going through before yours.

  3. Be sure to close all applications properly. Exiting correctly helps to assure disk space on the file servers. After exiting all programs, leave the computer on and at the desktop screen.

  4. Please be gentle with the disk drives. Don’t slam the disks in or pull them out forcefully. ROUGH TREATMENT CAN AND WILL DAMAGE YOUR DISKETTE.

  5. When using a CD ROM, be sure to put the CD in the ROM drive – if you have not used a CD before, ask for assistance.

  6. Check out hardware or software at the front counter. You will need to leave collateral in exchange for the item such as your drivers license or keys. Remember to leave yourself enough time for check out -- don’t just set the items on the counter thinking that the computer aide will know who returned them. YOU are responsible for the items until they are logged back in by the computer aide.

  7. Certain software is limited to a few machines. Priority for these machines is given to students who are required to use this software for class assignments. If you need access to special software, ask on which machines it is installed. If you are using a machine and someone else needs access to special software installed on that machine, you will be asked to move.

  8. Students cannot install software or download programs without prior authorization from Computer Services.

  9. Due to health concerns, headsets/phones will not be available for check-out in the labs. Students must provide their own. Headsets are available in the campus bookstore.
