- Su/F/W/Sp This course serves to provide students with a basic knowledge of
microorganisms and their role in the disease process. Emphasis is placed upon
bacteria and viruses with some consideration of fungi and protozoans. Bacterial
structure is examined in detail followed by discussion of growth, metabolism
and genetics of microorganisms. Application of the role which each of these
topics plays in infection and disease is stressed. Concepts related to
inhibition of microbial growth and the role of immunity and host defense
mechanisms are also discussed. The course concludes with discussions of
transmissible disease of concern to the healthcare provider. Laboratory
techniques for the study and identification of bacteria utilizing aseptic
techniques are also presented.
