History of the Middle East (Eastern Civilization)

- F/W/Sp An introductory survey of the Middle Eastern history from the First
Century to the present. Topics covered include the peoples of the region, the
rise of Christianity and Islam, Arab conquests starting in the Sixth
Century, Arab struggles with the Byzantine and Persian empires, the
flowering of Arab culture during the Caliphate, the Crusades, the rise of
the Turkish empires, religious struggles within the region, struggles with the
West during the era of European imperialism, the importance of petroleum in the
region, conflicts arising from the creation of Israel, and relations with
the United States in the modern era. This course is also offered in an
independent format. Proficiency Needed: Reading, Writing.
