This introductory course is designed for the student with limited or no previous experience in pottery/ceramics. Students are introduced to the materials, tools and manipulative skills necessary to create both utilitarian and aesthetic three-dimensional art forms, with an emphasis on the vessel. Visual literacy is developed through a study and application of the principles and elements of design. Students create an equal balance of hand-built and wheel-thrown projects, utilize various techniques of decorating and glazing, and evaluate student and historical vessels. Basic press-molding techniques are introduced. The theory and practice in loading and firing the electric kiln is covered. ART254, ART255 and ART256 are sequential courses.
