Course Description

ART281
Painting I
In this beginning course, students learn visual language by manipulating tools and materials in the painting medium. Basic compositional concerns including placement and scale of subject matter, pictorial balance, volume and spatial depth are covered and applied to the painting process. Critical thinking is developed through both individual and group critiques addressing the integration of form with content. These concepts, combined with discussions of painting ideology, critical analysis and study of practicing artists, expand the students' perceptions of themselves as artists within a historical and contemporary context. Sequential.
