NBCU Academy Extends Geographic Footprint in Western Region, Deepening Connection with Diverse Student Population

GRESHAM, OREGON (January 26, 2023) – Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) is excited to announce a new partnership with NBCU Academy. Besides funding scholarships for 18 students, the Integrated Media Department will also receive resources, training and development – in addition to access to the news group’s world-class journalists.

MHCC was selected as the only two-year college in the West for NBCU Academy which started in 2021. Currently, NBCU Academy is partnering with 30 colleges and universities to be a part of the award-winning program.

“We are thrilled and honored NBCU Academy has selected MHCC and the Integrated Media Department to be a member of the Academy,” MHCC Dean of Integrated Media Laura Nash said. “The mission of the Academy, which is to diversify workforce through a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion aligns with our mission.”

NBCU Academy reflects Comcast NBCUniversal and NBCU News Group’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Academy initiative provides tools, resources, and platforms for underrepresented voices.

“MHCC’s new strategic plan places equity at its heart, as we seek to provide every person within our community the tools to be successful. The scholarships, internships, and other resources provided by our partnership with NBCU Academy will give our students the hands-on training and ethical grounding to ensure they represent the voices of all people,” Nash said.

MHCC President Dr. Lisa Skari is also pleased with this partnership stating, “We are continually seeking opportunities for our students to help them achieve their academic goals. This investment in MHCC and our Integrated Media Department will give students a broader continuum of resources to succeed.”
