• MHCC AAWCC Hosts Shelie Macias Memorial Scholarship Book Sale

For Shelie Macias, Mt. Hood Community College was a central place in her life from an early age. She began coming to the campus as a child with her parents, both MHCC employees. After graduating high school, Macias served as a work-study student in the MHCC Adult Basic Skills’ English as a Second Language program before becoming a full-time employee at the college. Throughout her career at MHCC, she worked diligently to teach English to Hispanic and Latino students; and she took her love of education off-campus and taught in a local prison.

On December 17, 1998, Macias was struck and killed by a truck. She left behind a husband and three young children. She also left behind a powerful impact on the college community she’d called home for many years. Macias’ mother, JoyLynn Woodard, fondly remembers her daughter’s spirit and her laugh.

“Shelie was one of the most vibrant spirits on this planet,” said Woodard, a lab specialist with MHCC’s nursing program. “She was a fighter, a healer, a bringer of joy and laughter, and I still feel her presence as I endure each day.”

The Shelie Macias Memorial Scholarship was founded by MHCC’s chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) and awarded for the first time in 2001. Today, the Shelie Macias scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time student of Hispanic or Latino descent who is enrolled in the MHCC ESL program. The scholarship pays for tuition and activities/technology fees for an entire academic year and provides a book stipend.

On Thursday, May 11, the MHCC AAWCC will host a book sale, all proceeds of which will help fund the Shelie Macias scholarship. The AAWCC will sell gently used books, DVDs and CDs. The event will take place on the Main Mall at the Gresham Campus. You can see a memorial garden dedicated to Shelie Macias in the courtyard north of the MHCC Library.
