  • Oregon Promise Grant FAQs

Is the Oregon Promise Grant meant to apply toward tuition only, or tuition and fees?
The Oregon Promise Grant is based on tuition only; however, if a student’s entire tuition is covered through the Pell Grant and/or the Oregon Opportunity Grant, they can apply their Oregon Promise Grant toward their fees or other educational expenses.
    How are the awards calculated?
The awards are last-dollar to the Pell Grant/Oregon Opportunity Grant and calculated based on averaged tuition rates across the Oregon community colleges. The Oregon Promise Grant will be included on your MHCC Award Offer and will need to be accepted or declined through My MHCC. Learn more about the award calculation on the OSAC website.
How many credits does a student need to take each term to receive the Oregon Promise Grant?
Students need to be enrolled for at least six credits a term to receive the Oregon Promise Grant. At six to eight credits, student will receive half of the maximum award for the quarter. Those enrolled nine to eleven credits will receive three-quarters of the maximum award amount for the quarter. Those enrolled twelve credits or more will receive the maximum award for the quarter.
Do students need to attend Fall Term to receive the Oregon Promise Grant each year?
Yes. If students do not attend at least six credits at an Oregon community college during Fall term, they will lose the Oregon Promise Grant for all future terms.
    What about the $50 copay?
The award amount students see on their MHCC award has the $50 copay already deducted so students will not need to pay that separately.
Are students required to maintain a certain GPA to keep the Oregon Promise Grant for the academic year?
Yes. Students must maintain financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards. This means completing all credits students attempt each term with a term GPA of at least 2.00.
What happens if a student does not meet the financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress standards?
The student would either be placed on financial aid warning or financial aid suspension. See “Managing Your Aid” on the MHCC website for specifics regarding SAP standards.
Have all the awards been processed?
Awards are being made weekly as FAFSAs and ORSAAs are being fixed or updated. We will continue to make awards through August.
What if the student didn’t get an email but they meet the requirements AND submitted the application on time?
    They should check the following:
    • Did they log into their OSAC account to make sure it says they have a valid application, transcripts, and FAFSA, and if they were awarded?
    • If they were awarded, then they may need to check their spam mailbox.
    • If they weren’t awarded, then they probably either didn’t actually have a valid application, have not filed a FAFSA, did not include a community college on their FAFSA, or, if they filed an ORSAA, their award is pending until we can get the ORSAA data to work with our system.
If a student got an email that said they were denied because their FAFSA was rejected, can they still get Oregon Promise when they address that issue?
    Yes
Is the Oregon Promise award amount based on a student's EFC (Expected Family Contribution)?
The amount is not based on EFC. If someone is eligible for a full Pell and full Oregon Opportunity Grant (OOG), their award amount is $1000. If they are eligible for a partial Pell and no OOG, the award amount will be based on whether the Pell is enough to cover tuition or not. If it almost covers tuition and there is less than $1000 difference (before the co-pay removal), then the award amount is $850. If the difference is more than $1000, then it will be the difference. If someone is not eligible for Pell and OOG at all, then the award amount is either actual tuition, or the average tuition across the community colleges, whichever is less. The current award amounts are based on estimated tuition rates for the current year.
    What does ‘tentatively approved’ mean?
It means that a student's award amounts and eligibility may change based on changes in FAFSA/ORSAA information. All Oregon Promise awards are subject to action and adjustments by the Oregon Legislature.
Is there a deadline for the funds to be used by the students?
They must be taking at least half-time credits fall quarter to receive the grant. If they do not take at least half-time in the fall, they will lose the grant completely.
