The AVID Coordinator

Lauren Smith comes to Mt. Hood Community College with a background in Secondary Education and History. After graduating from University of Oregon with a B.A. in History and University of Portland with a M.A.T., Smith returned to Reynolds High School to teach Social Studies, Media Communications, and AVID in 2006, five years after graduating from the same institution. In 2010, Smith was selected to receive AVID Training and became one of two AVID Elective Teachers at Reynolds. She also served as AVID Building Coordinator, working with the Reynolds School District to expand the program and ensure its success. Smith was hired in July, 2012 as MHCC's AVID Program Coordinator and looks forward to promoting the AVID for Higher Education Program at Mt. Hood Community College. Lauren Smith, AVID Coordinator

The AVID Learning Specialists

Sarah Aimone

Sarah Aimone grew up in New Jersey but moved to coastal North Carolina to earn a B.S. in Marine Biology at UNC Wilmington. After working in a fisheries lab at the university, she quickly realized that scientific research was not her passion. She completed a M.A.T. in Secondary Science Education and spent nine years as a high school science teacher, environmental educator, advisor, and college tutor. She was selected to become a member of the AVID site team at Hoggard High School where she taught the AVID elective and various science classes, focusing on diverse learning styles and learning disabilities. Sarah came to Portland for a change of scenery and is quickly becoming a part of the community teaching yoga to at-risk youth. At MHCC, she is a Learning Specialist for both AVID and TRiO-SSS with a focus on math, science, and general academic success strategies. Sarah loves her job and is passionate about helping students reach their academic and personal goals.

Aslinn Arcuri, AVID Learning Specialist Aslinn Arcuri M.Ed. is a native Oregonian. She graduated from Lincoln High School and attended the University of Oregon where she graduated with a B.A. in Religious Studies. She got her MA in Education at Portland State University. She has been working in the field of education for the last eight years in a number of capacities. She has worked in Special Education, taught English in Thailand, lead engineering camps for kids, substituted for Portland Public Schools, created drug-prevention curriculum and created an educational website. She is passionate about improving the education system and ensuring that all students have access to quality instructors and institutions of learning. Aslinn Arcuri works at MHCC as an AVID Learning Specialist where she specializes in reading, writing and general academic success strategies.
Matthew Farina Matthew Farina has a Bachelor of Arts in History from Colorado State University and is currently finishing up his Master of Adult Education at Portland State University. After working for a number of years at the American Red Cross he transitioned into the field of education. Over the past five years, he has worked in MHCC’s Adult Basic Skills department and worn many hats. He has coordinated ESL classes in the Rockwood neighborhood and worked with GED students and ABS faculty at both the Gresham and Maywood park campuses of MHCC. He believes in the power of education has a passion for helping students reach their goals.
Sara Gregg

Sara Gregg is a native Oregonian. She started her higher education journey at Eastern Oregon University with a BS in Cultural Anthropology, followed by a master’s degree from Portland State University in the PACE program. She also completed 555 hours of training to become a licensed massage therapist here in Oregon and is still practicing. She has worked in varied educational backgrounds starting here at Mt Hood back in 2006 as an Academic Advisor. She is also part-time faculty teaching HD College Success classes. She loves just about anything outdoors and spent 5 weeks in 2013 in Cusco, Peru doing Service Learning at a hospital for children with mental and physical disabilities. She is enthusiastic about supporting students academic progress and helping them reach their dreams!

AVID Instructors

Dawn Forrester, AVID Instructor Dawn Forrester has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from San Francisco State University and a Master of Science in Counseling, with focus on College and Career Counseling from San Francisco State University. Dawn has been a counselor at Mt. Hood Community College since 2006 and looks forward to serving MHCC students for many years to come! Dawn is passionate about education and believes that education is the key to unlocking many wonderful possibilities in one's life. Her professional goal is to help students reach their goals and she strives to assist students in discovering their true potential academically and professionally.
Paige Hirston Paige Hairston has her BS in Liberal Arts and her Masters in Education, Med (Curriculum and Instruction K-12), she has taught High School English, has her K-8 teaching certificate in the State of Washington and sometimes teaches for the Evergreen School District. She has a husband of 21 years and four daughters ages 20, 18, 16, and 12. Two of her daughters attend Purdue University and they both play soccer at Purdue. Paige has been teaching in higher education for over 10 years at PCC and then at Mt. Hood Community College. Hobbies, she loves reading, cooking, attending her daughters' soccer games, going for runs with her dog Chow, and taking Zumba and Turbo-kick classes
Michelle Hampton Michele Hampton earned her Master's in English from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and Bachelors' degrees in English and Finance from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. She has diverse experience in business, owning and operating companies in agriculture and real estate before entering teaching. She has taught at small liberal arts colleges and community colleges since 1996 and has been an instructor at MHCC since 2001. In addition to teaching, she loves to write fiction and play the bass guitar, bringing stories and music into the classroom to help transfer her love of language to her students.
Zach Hudson Zach Hudson got his MA in English from King Alfred's College in Winchester, England, and his M.Ed from Portland State. He teaches reading, writing and academic skills. Before coming to MHCC, he taught English and Special Education at Corbett High School and Gresham High School, and coached Speech and Debate. He has self-published a graphic novel and a children's book. In his spare time, he plays fiddle and banjo, and calls square dances.
Christy Weigel

Christy Weigel, HD100 College Success and EL115C Academic Success Strategies instructor, was also once a community college student. She graduated in 2004 with an Associate of Science from Linn-Benton Community College, and also possesses a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2008) and Master of Business Administration (2012) from Marylhurst University. Christy has worked for MHCC since 2008 and is the Orientation Center Coordinator.
