Mt. Hood Community College to Unveil Equity and Community Resource Center: A Transformative Step in Addressing Student Needs
January 02, 2025Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) will celebrate the grand opening of the Equity and Community Resource Center (ECRC), a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing the growing needs of the college’s diverse student body.
The launch of the ECRC represents a pivotal moment in MHCC’s legacy of leadership, innovation, and equity. In this new space, the college is bringing service providers to our students in a modern, technologically advanced and family friendly environment. Service providers found in the ECRC will include DHS, TriMet, Barney’s Food Pantry, housing support, technology support, and more.
“With one out of two students relying on basic needs services to complete their education successfully we knew we needed to do something to change the paradigm. The opening of the Equity and Community Resource Center marks a historic moment in MHCC’s journey toward innovative problem-solving and leadership in the community,” said Traci Simmons, AVP of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at MHCC.” The center’s creation is groundbreaking in its holistic approach to supporting equity and basic needs on a college campus.”
Today, more than 60% of MHCC students report struggling to meet basic needs, including housing, food, and transportation. The ECRC aims to change that. Designed as a lifeline for first-generation, low-income, and traditionally underrepresented students, it provides essential resources, advocacy, and a sense of belonging.
“The Equity and Community Resource Center shines a light on the often-hidden journeys of our students,” said Simmons. “This is about more than just providing services—it’s about creating hope, opportunity, and a supportive space for those navigating the challenges of higher education.”
The ECRC exemplifies the impact of strategic public investment. With dedicated support from Oregon’s elected officials, the center underscores the value of collective action in addressing community challenges.
“This center is a prime example of what can be achieved through public investment,” said MHCC President Dr. Lisa Skari. “The vision behind the ECRC has been brought to life through collaboration, and it will have a lasting impact on our community. The upcoming bond proposal is our next opportunity to build upon this transformative work.”
The grand opening event will highlight stories of resilience and success, underscoring the vital role the ECRC will play in transforming lives. Attendees will hear from MHCC students who have overcome significant challenges and community leaders who have championed equity and access in education.
With the theme "Opening Doors. Generating Hope!", the ECRC grand opening is not just a celebration—it’sa call to action. As MHCC continues to build a brighter future for its students and the community, the center stands as a testament to what can be achieved when we invest in people.
