Principles of Community

The core themes of Mt. Hood Community College are teaching and learning, community, and building resources. The college is committed to innovation, creative efforts, working together, and debate and asking questions in an open and inclusive environment that nurtures the growth of all students, faculty, and staff. These principles of community are vital for ensuring a welcoming and inclusive space for all members of the college and for serving as a guide for the way we act and live.

  • We believe that diversity is needed for maintaining greatness in all our ventures.
  • We seek to keep open minds and to foster compassion and inclusiveness.
  • We are committed to ensuring freedom of expression and speech, in a manner based on respect, on the many views held by our diverse groups of people.
  • We value opposing views as well as points of common ground and promote respect in all dealings with others.
  • We affirm our duty to create a space of learning that is civil, fair, and based on respect and working together for our diverse groups of people.
  • Our college is no place for acts of discrimination, harassment, profiling, intimidation, or other harm to people based on their race, color, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, religious beliefs, political stance, sexual orientation, gender identity, citizenship, or nationality among other traits. Such acts are against MHCC's standards of community, board policies, and administrative regulations governing the conduct of students, faculty, and staff.
  • We grant that the modern world carries historical and divisive biases based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, and religion, and we seek to promote awareness and understanding through the sharing of knowledge and to resolve conflicts that arise from these biases in our college.
