Electrical Switchover - UPDATE;
Industrial Tech and Visual Arts Expected to Open Saturday
What: The Campus Electrical Replacement Project (CERP), which began last February, will be completed this month following planned power outages on the Gresham Campus. We want to do everything we can to serve students as they prepare for summer and fall. Accordingly, we have worked with the contractor to develop a schedule in which registration, business office, advising, financial aid and other student service areas will be with power, safe and therefore able to open Thursday, June 21.
Why: The existing electrical equipment is more than 40 years old and at risk of major failure if not replaced very soon. The expected lifespan of this type of equipment and copper cable is typically 30 years. The power failures the Gresham Campus experienced during the last two years are a direct result of equipment deterioration due to age. The switchover from the old power substations to the new substations requires contractors to work with high voltage lines. Contractors need to complete the project safely, without the added responsibility and risk to MHCC employees, students and visitors on Campus.
How: The Gresham Campus is geographically divided into two sections. The South Campus is comprised of health, physical education, aquatics and athletic fields. The North Campus includes all other buildings, including the Academic Center, Industrial Technology, Visual Arts Center, the new Early Childhood Center, the fisheries complex and the former Head Start building /MOD.
When: The North Campus electrical switchover and subsequent closure will occur prior to the start of summer term. To ensure everyone’s safety, contractors will turn off the power and close the north portion of the Gresham Campus June 19 and 20 (and a portion on June 21 – details follow in a Q & A document). Contractors will turn off the power and close most of the south portion of the Gresham Campus June 28 and 29.
Contractors will replace five power substations that serve the North Campus June 19, 20 and 21. The remaining two power substations that serve the South Campus will be replaced June 28 and 29. The Bruning Center for Allied Health Education, Maywood Park Campus, Aquatic Center and all other MHCC sites will not be impacted by this project.
Who: Gresham Campus employees, with a few exceptions, will not be allowed to work when their areas are without power/closed. Exceptions include employees who have been pre-authorized to work, such as facilities and public safety staff. Entry will be limited to specific gates.
