  • Nine-month certificate program. This program starts one time a year, summer term and runs consecutively through the winter term for a total of 38 credits. There are two prerequisite courses and then three terms of full-time study. The current program curriculum can be viewed here.

    Thank you for your interest in the Medical Assistant program at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC).

    The Medical Assistant program uses a cohort model of delivering quality instruction and will provide students with a complex body of knowledge, specialized skills and practical experiences needed by a medical assistant to meet the standards for entry into the profession. Students start the program together, learn together and graduate together.

    Program Start

    This program only starts summer term and runs consecutively through the winter term for a total of 42 credits. There are two prerequisite courses and then three terms of full-time study. Current program curriculum can be viewed here.

    Certification

    Upon completion of the program requirements, the student earns a Certificate of Completion and will be eligible to sit for certification through the AMT (American Medical Technologists), NCCT (National Center for Competency Testing) and the NHA (National Healthcare Association).

    Student Enrollment

    This is an open entry program. There is no application process to register for program classes. Students register on a space available basis after prerequisite requirements have been met. Once program classes are full, students can be added to the waitlist.

    Immunization, Drug Screening and Other Requirements

    Students must pass a criminal background check, drug screen, and submit all required immunizations as directed by the program director. How to submit documentation is reviewed at the mandatory orientation on Monday June 26th 1pm-3pm in room 1756. While the Medical Assistant program is open entry, clinical placement is at the discretion of the Medical Assistant clinical sites and therefore, the student may not be able to complete the program if clinical placement is either not obtained or successfully completed.

    Immunizations: The Medical Assistant program requires the following immunizations:

    • Hepatitis B (Hep B)
    • Mumps, Measles and Rubella (MMR)
    • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis (Tdap)
    • Varicella
    • COVID
    • Recommended: Polio and Influenza (seasonal flu)
      • Tuberculosis (TB) Screen: IGRA Blood test in accordance with CDC guidelines.
      • Drug screening: There is a 10-panel drug screen, which must include screens for the following eight substances: Amphetamines, including methamphetamines; Barbiturates; Benzodiazepines; Cocaine; Marijuana; Methadone; Opiates; Phencyclidine. (Completed during fall term of the program)

    Restrictions: If you have been convicted of a felony, please be advised that this may prevent you from placement. Contact program director for further information on this matter.
