    Introduction to Perioperative Nursing - Course Number RNX27

    This hybrid course is an introduction for the Circulating Registered Nurse who has little or no previous scrubbing experience and wishes to care for the patient and assist the surgical team in the scrub role. Topics of discussion will include: an introduction to the classification, identification and selection of basic surgical instrumentation; perioperative case management during the pre, intra, and post-operative phases to include preparation of the patient including patient positioning, transfer and surgical site prep and draping; preparation of the sterile field; principles and techniques of hemostasis; specimen care; principles of wound healing, including selection and handling of suture, drains and dressings; and prevention of retained surgical items. Specialty and accessory equipment for endoscopic and robotic surgery will be discussed.

    In the lab portion of the course students will have the opportunity to practice and demonstrate cognitive, psychomotor, and affective competencies relevant to the scrub role. Emphasis will be placed on the application of aseptic and sterile technique principles and how they relate to safe patient care practices. Selected general and gynecologic procedures will be introduced.

    Course information: Full Term (11-12 weeks) RNX27 ​didactic delivered online (asynchronous, no set day), ​lab Saturdays 0800- 1430 every other week (lab).

    Sterile Processing Technician

    Course Number - AHX20

    Sterile Processing Technician Overview
    Sterile Processing Technicians process, store, and distribute medical and surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment for operating rooms and other areas of hospitals and healthcare facilities. They understand and apply principles and methods of sterilization and infection control. This course provides instruction for students who wish to function in entry-level positions in Central Service and Sterile Processing departments of healthcare facilities. Based on the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM) curriculum, the course is designed for students who wish to obtain certification for Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST). The course includes 60 hours of didactic instruction and 30 hours of lab instruction. Please note: 400 hours of hands-on experience verified by employer is also required for eligibility for the IAHSCMM exam. This course does not fulfill that requirement.

    Prerequisites

    • RD090 and WR090, each with a grade of "C" or better; or placement above stated course levels (College Placement Test).

    Please note- high school diploma or GED may be required for employment.
    Must be physically able to lift heavy instrument trays. Good verbal communication skills required.
