Our History
Mt. Hood Community College was started in 1966 and now enrolls more than 18,000 students each year.
We now offer classes at three locations – the Gresham Campus, the Maywood Park Campus, the Bruning Center for Allied Health Education – as well as several local public schools.
Strong Leadership
From the start, MHCC has been governed by a volunteer board of directors made up of members of our community. MHCC board members are chosen every four years. They meet on the second Wednesday night of each month.
The college has also been fortunate to be guided by several successful past presidents including Earl Klapstein (1966-1976), R. Stephen Nicholson (1977-1985), Paul E. Kreider (1986-1996), Joel Vela (1996-2000), Robert Silverman (2001-2007), John “Ski” Sygielski (2008-2011), Dr. Michael Hay (2011-2013), and Dr. Debra Derr (2013-2018). MHCC’s current president is Dr. Lisa Skari, who took the position in the summer of 2018.
