Physics - Program Details

The physics program at Mt. Hood Community College studies the structure and organization of the universe. It encompasses the observation of forces and matter, of motion, of cause and effect, and of the intrinsic properties of space and time. Physics analyzes these concepts in detail and uses them to synthesize models of complex phenomena.

Earning Your Degree

When pursuing the physics major, you can complete courses toward the science and elective requirements on your associate degree. You are encouraged to work with a university transfer advisor to ensure the transferability of courses so that you can continue your studies to pursue a bachelor’s degree.

Program Outcomes

After completing this program you'll be able to:

  • Retain and apply critical physics concepts while enrolled in the curriculum and upon transfer.
  • Work cooperatively, use equipment and instruments properly, and carefully analyze data in the laboratory setting.
  • Demonstrate mastery of physics concepts.
  • Transition conceptual material into accurate mathematical models.
  • Utilize calculus-based mathematics to solve physics problems.

Courses and Curriculum

During this program, you’ll take courses such as physics with calculus, observational astronomy, and more. The program takes between 90-92 credits to complete. For the most part, you can complete courses that fulfill general education requirements in any term. You should work with your faculty advisor to create a custom academic plan based on course placement levels, career goals, and full-time or part-time status.
