Individual Mechanical Program of Repair Technicians (IMPORT) - How to Get Started

With the guidance of the program advisor, students are expected to contact dealerships or independent repair shops to arrange interviews until a suitable sponsorship site has been found. The automotive dealership experience provides students with paid hands-on, learning internships in the second, fourth, sixth and eighth terms. The average time for a student to secure a dealership sponsorship is from one to three months.

The Chrysler MCAP, IMPORT and Subaru-U program works in partnership with industry dealerships. As such, dealerships have the option of pre-approving sponsorship of applicants. These students have priority for admission which reduces the number of positions available to other applicants per year.

If you are currently working at a dealership, see the service manager or director for sponsorship of the program. If they are not familiar with the program, have them contact the program faculty for information.

Applicants with priority consideration (pre-approved sponsorship) must meet the same admissions criteria as the other applicants. Exceptions will be granted in the following cases:

• Sponsored applicant lacks a license but will have license by June 16, 2025.
• Sponsored applicant does not meet one of the placement scores/coursework but has evidence of sufficient skill required to pass MHCC's auto courses.
• Sponsored applicant is not 18 by the first co-op.

Apply for general admission to MHCC if you are new to MHCC or have not attended in the last four terms. Select General Studies as your major. Please note it could take one to two business days to receive your MHCC ID number.

Course Placement

• Students can use CPT (College Placement Test), Smarter Balanced, high school GPA, or GED® scores to meet the academic requirements. Self-placement is not accepted for meeting the program requirement.
• Applicants using the Accuplacer College Placement Test (CPT) are encouraged to practice for the test and review English and math concepts by using Accuplacer’s free study app. CPT scores are valid for five years.

Official Transcripts

• Transcripts showing completed coursework that meets the academic requirements must be issued directly by the institution from which the course(s) were taken. Coursework showing as transferred from one institution to another is not accepted. Official electronic transcripts submitted via secure electronic delivery service may be submitted to [email protected]. E-transcripts cannot be sent from the student to MHCC as they are not considered official. If submitting transcripts by mail, send to:

• Regionally Accredited Institutions: Required for prerequisite courses.
• Non-Regionally Accredited Institutions: Not required.
• AP (Advanced Placement), CLEP, DSST, GED or IB (International Baccalaureate) Transcripts/Scores and Foreign/Non-US Based Educational Transcript are required only if using for meeting the admission requirement.
• MHCC transcript: Not required, already on file.

Submit your application from October 21, 2024 through June 25, 2025. If applicable, please be sure to have your documents ready for uploading and transcript(s) available for entering your prerequisite courses. Once started, your application cannot be saved.

Summer Term 2025 Application Timeline

• October 21, 2024: You may submit your application

• June 23, 2025: Summer term classes begin

After you have submitted your application for the IMPORT program at MHCC, here’s what the selection process entails!

If you successfully complete the application process, you will be notified by email that your application is complete. Your next step will be to obtain a dealership sponsor with guidance from the program faculty and maintain that sponsorship throughout the two-year program. If you lose your dealership sponsorship, you must work with program instructors/coordinator to locate and apply for new sponsorship; if you are unable to secure a sponsoring dealership, you will be dropped from the program. Please note, some dealers require pre-employment drug testing.

Once applicants have met all program criteria, including dealership sponsorship, they are admitted on a first completed, first accepted basis until the program is full. Once the program is full, applicants will be placed on a waitlist.

If you are offered a seat in the program, you must:

1. Reply to the email from [email protected] to confirm acceptance of position in the Chrysler MCAP, IMPORT or Subaru-U program.
2. Register for first term courses by the date specified in the acceptance email.

If you are not accepted into the program but meet the admissions criteria, you may apply for the fall start program that begins fall term 2026.

Please note: Students may be accepted at the discretion of the program faculty and department dean after the application close date. Faculty permission into a class or classes does not guarantee admission into the program.

Admission to the college does not guarantee admission to the Chrysler MCAP, IMPORT and Subaru-U Automotive Technology program. Admission of all students to the program is centralized in the admissions, registration, and records office. This office has the final authority on all admission criteria and is the sole authority to inform students of their admission status.

Financial Aid: Applicants may qualify for financial aid and are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) available online. This application includes grants, loans, and work study. Scholarships are also available.

To avoid missing financial aid deadlines and opportunities, it is recommended that the FAFSA® be completed on October 1 for the following academic year or at the time of program applications. Financial aid inquiries may be directed to [email protected].

Veteran Services: If you are a veteran, member of the Reserves or National Guard and plan to take classes, you may be eligible for educational benefits through the Department of Veterans' Affairs or Oregon Department of Veteran Affairs. Benefits may also be available to eligible spouses and/or children of veterans. The Veteran Services Center, located in AC1152 on the main level of the Gresham campus, provides a one-stop, centrally located area for students applying for or who have questions regarding their veteran benefits.
