Music - After Graduation

The Music program at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) will set you up for success as you continue at a four-year university.

Future Careers

MHCC Career Coaches are here to help you explore your career options after graduation. Below are a few common paths graduates can pursue.

Musicians and Singers

As a Musician or Singer, you will perform before live audiences in concerts, recitals, educational presentations, and other social gatherings. You might sing a cappella or with musical accompaniment.

Audio and Video Technicians

In these roles, you will diagnose and resolve media system problems and compress, digitize, duplicate, and store audio and video data.

Music Directors and Composers

As a Music Director or Composer, you will study scores to learn the music in detail and to develop interpretations. You will also apply elements of music theory to create musical and tonal structures, including harmonies and melodies.

Music Therapists

As a Music Therapist, you will be responsible for communicating with clients to build rapport, acknowledge their progress, or reflect upon their reactions to musical experiences. You will also customize treatment programs for specific areas of music therapy, such as intellectual or developmental disabilities, educational settings, geriatrics, medical settings, mental health, physical disabilities, or wellness.

Sound Engineering Technicians

As a Sound Engineering Technician, you are responsible for setting up, testing, and adjusting recording equipment for recording sessions and live performances. You will also prepare for recording sessions by setting up microphones.

Musical Instrument Repairers and Tuners

In such roles, your many daily tasks will include comparing instrument pitches with tuning tool pitches to tune instruments. You will also string instruments and adjust trusses and bridges of instruments to obtain specified string tensions and heights.

Secondary School Teachers, Except Special and Career/Technical Education

In this role, you will teach music to students and confer with parents or guardians, other teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems. Plus, you will need to plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
